Rupert (The Natural) van Aswegen

AMATEUR CAREER

Started working out in an amateur boxing gym at age six and trained for three years before he had his first amateur fight age 9. 

Rupert had success as an amateur winning numerous titles. Titles included four Eastern-Transvaal titles, three Transvaal titles and winning three National Championships (South-African). Rupert’s amateur career totaled 98 fights, of which he had 90 wins, 8 losses which were avenged with wins. He was undefeated in his last six years as an amateur.

Professional Career

Pro-debut 1997 vs. Johan Sinden former two time amateur national champion. Rupert won by unanimous points decision over 4 rounds.

One of  Rupert’s highlights were against  Australian fighter Paul Briggs  who was rated in the light heavyweight division at nr 1 in the world by the WBA.  Paul Briggs at the time was signed with world renowned Promoter Don King. He lost a very close decision of which many felt, had the fight taken place in South Africa the decision were his. Rupert has been rated nr 1 on the middle weight division (date 2003), earlier in his career he was also rated nr1 in the super middleweight division, currently Rupert is rated at nr1 in the light heavy weight division (date 2008).

March 30 2010 Rupert van Aswegen won the South African light Heavy weight title at emperors Palace.

Family Boxing History

Gerda van Aswegen (mother).Maiden name COETZEE, sister of former World Heavyweight Champion Gerrie Coetzee, grew up with a strong boxing background. She’s a big influence in Rupert’s boxing career since the day he first set foot in the amateur gym. She’s been the inspiration to Rupert becoming a three time National Champion.

Hennie van Aswegen (Father). He himself was a great amateur during his early ages. Owned his own amateur boxing gym. Trained a couple of national champions. He trained Rupert during his first few years age 9 to 13. He provided the basics for Ruperts boxing Skills.

Ciska van Aswegen (Sister) a great supporter of Rupert’s boxing was a well formed School Athlete that earned her region colors for hurdles.

Stone van Aswegen (Brother) following in Ruperts foot steps already achieved an amateur National title.

Flip Coetzee (Grandfather). Trainer of Former World Heavyweight Champion Gerrie Coetzee. Rupert’s boxing career started with his grandfather having him on his lap punching his hands since he was six months old. He took Rupert to the gym to watch his uncle working out from an early age, which gave Rupert the incentive to become a Champion

MY UNCLE

Gerrie Coetzee he was the most successful boxer of the brothers. He was amateur national champion as well a professional national champion he later on then became the WBC World Heavyweight Champion by Knocking out Michael Dokes.
